About us
Wanderers Retreat eco resort is a very special place. Situated in 1.6 hectares of tranquil melaleuca rainforest, a natural koala habitat, with walking access to the beautiful One Mile Beach, Boat Harbour or Kingsley Beach.
Our unique location is just 2.5 hours from Sydney and 25 minutes from Newcastle airport.
Stockton Beach, nearby, has 32 km of the longest moving sand dunes in the southern hemisphere. These truly awe-inspiring dunes reach heights of over 40 meters with slopes up to 60 degrees to form a majestic, moonscape.
Port Stephens area is filled with fantastic restaurants, cafés, wineries and breweries just waiting to be explored. Enjoy an evening of fine dining or unwind with an alfresco brunch and a cup of coffee, the choice is all yours.
We have the perfect location for a weekend away or a relaxing holiday escape for the busy lifestyle of today.
Our Cottages
Wanderers accommodation consists of a unique selection of one to four bedroom individual private cottage accommodation. Ideal for couples and family getaways. Our various cottage styles are sited for maximum privacy in the tranquility of a natural rainforest setting. Walk along paths to your cottage that wind amongst ferns and rainforest for a very private and secluded setting.
All cottages are self-contained and include; Free WiFi, BBQ’s on the verandahs, AC, DVD player, laundry, off street parking.
Relax beside the12 metre freeform saltwater pool. Maybe get a visit from the local possums or spy a koala from your verandah.
Things to do
Play or just soak up the sun by the pool, go snorkeling, fishing, take a surf lesson, ride a bike or walk on one of the many tracks within Tomaree National Park just 400 metres away.
Go whale and dolphin spotting from our local beaches or take a cruise. One Mile Beach and Boat Harbour provides excellent vantage points to watch the annual whale migration, which runs from March to early November each year.
Port Stephens is a play ground with so much to do; Tomaree Head lookout; golf; cinema; bushwalking; cycling; surfing; shopping; marina; medical facilities; clubs and pubs; markets; restaurants; winery and brewery; ferries; harbour cruises; ten pin and lawn bowls; tennis; jet skiing; kayaking; cafes and the list goes on….
Do a day trip to the nearby Hunter Valley and partake of the famous wine district or explore the spectacular World Heritage-listed Barrington Tops National Park

These 2 bedroom cottages cater for up to 5 people. The kitchen is fully equipped with full size gas stove, 2 door fridge amongst the inclusions. Come and stay, see firsthand what makes us so special and unique. Experience the rainforest and beach, the wildlife and the crystal clear evening skies.
Our cottages are positioned for privacy in a rainforest setting. Enjoy a short break, annual holiday or weekend away in one of our cedar clad individual cottages. Relax with friends, a cuppa or a glass of wine on the full length covered verandah.
The bathroom is equipped with a shower only. All linen is provided except for beach towels. On the outside is a good sized deck which is partly covered complete with Weber Family Q BBQ and table and chairs.

Terms & Conditions
To help facilitate an enjoyable stay for all of our guests, we ask that you read and follow these requirements of management.
By staying at WANDERERS RETREAT, you accept these terms and conditions and responsibility for your actions, the actions of those travelling with you and of any visitors, for compliance with these Terms and Conditions.
Please note that Wanderers Retreats Terms & Conditions (T&C's) as detailed per below always take precedent over any variations that may be found in the T&C's promoted by external Booking Agencies.
1. Payment Policy: Wanderers Retreat to confirm your reservation requires a 50% deposit of your total tariff at the time of making your reservation. The credit card details provided by you at the time of making the reservation will be debited by 50% of the total tariff plus the full merchant fee when applicable.
The balance of your booking tariff is required to be paid 14 days* prior to arrival. All accounts must be settled 14 days* prior to arrival unless prior arrangements are made. If the reservation is made less than 14 days before arrival, then the full amount is due. The deposit and balance can be processed at any time after the above times.
You, by staying at Wanderers Retreat, do duly authorise Wanderers Retreat to directly recover Excess Charges that may apply from your stay against the Credit Card provided for the reservation. Please refer to Excess Charges Policy below for details of this Condition of your stay.
We accept Visa and Mastercard. Merchant fees will be applied at the rate of 1.1% for all Mastercard and Visa transactions. Direct deposits are fee free.
Confirmation of your reservation means you agree to abide by Wanderers Retreats house rules, and the following booking terms and conditions
2. Cancellation policies. Please carefully check the details of your reservation to ensure we have your selection correct.
For reservations other than Christmas Holidays (NSW Christmas public school holidays): Cancellations or date changes made up to 30 days prior to check-in will be fully refunded, less a $50 administration fee and merchant fees incurred. Cancellation or date changes made within 30 days of check-in date are subject to 100% of the total tariff and merchant fees incurred unless the Retreat can be re-booked.
For Christmas Holiday reservations (the NSW Christmas public school holidays): Cancellations or date changes made up to 60 days prior to check-in will be fully refunded, less a $50 administration fee and merchant fees incurred. Cancellation or date changes made within 60 days of check-in date are subject to 100% of the total tariff and merchant fees incurred unless the Retreat can be re-booked.
The Retreat, at its discretion, offers a cancellation credit for some emergency cancellations. To qualify the reservation must be greater than 7 days, be fully paid at the time of cancellation, and the Client must demonstrate to the Retreats satisfaction that a genuine personal emergency has prevented their intended stay. The funds paid, less a $50 administration fee and merchant fees incurred, will be held in your client account and you will be given 6 months to use this credit.
In the event of a necessary date change or cancellation, all reasonable steps will be taken to rebook the Retreat at the same rate as your booking. If re-booked, funds paid will be refunded less a $50.00 admin charge and merchant fees incurred.
2 a. COVID-19 Cancellation Policy. COVID-19 is a known risk. The Retreat, at its discretion, offers a cancellation credit for some emergency COVID cancellations. This policy applies to all new reservations booked from the 20th May 2020. To qualify; the guest named on the reservation must be under a personal directive by the State Health Authorities to self-isolate due to COVID19 and that this directive has a direct impact on their stay.
The Retreat at its discretion offers a credit on funds paid per our credit policy if a guests stay is prevented by State Government travel restrictions, and then only if they cancel their reservation outside the 7 days prior to check-in. For last minute COVID cancellations inside 7 days the standard cancellation conditions apply.
If the Government advice changes and Wanderers is required to close for a period of time, all applicable bookings will be given a non-refundable credit by Wanderers Retreat in accordance with legal requirements under Australian Consumer Law.
3. Check-ins are from 2.00 pm. Registering with the Service NSW QR Code is government legislated and a mandatory requirement of your check-in. All guests on arrival, must have the Service NSW application functioning on their mobile device and are required to successfully self-register their group members against the Wanderers QR Code provided.
The booking must be under the name of the person checking in. In addition, the Guest must also provide a credit card in the name of the photographic ID. Any additional guests not included on the reservation must be paid for at this time.
We accept late check-ins. Prior arrangements are required if you are intending to arrive late ie weekdays after 6.00pm or weekends after 4.00pm. We can make check-in arrangements to best suit you. . All we require is an early phone call telling us what your most likely arrival time is.
4. Check outs time: For cottages and the Beach House the check-out is by 10.00am.
Treehouses and Bush Spa with Hot-tub Cottage for 2-night stays or longer check-out time is by 12.00 midday. For 1 night stays check-out is by 10.00am.
If you require a later check out, please ask and it will be accommodated if at all possible. Please do not assume that you can stay past these times. Fees may apply for late check outs. Refer Excess Charges Policy. The key drop is located at Reception to the right of the entrance door.
5. Smoking Policy. Smoking is not permitted inside the cottages or in or near the swimming pool. Wanderers retreat reserves the right to charge additional cleaning fees to remove smoke odours and recover any other costs associated with the accommodation not being suitable for rental. This condition extends to smoke odours entering the cottage from smoking outdoors where doors and windows have not been closed in an attempt to stop the smoking odours entering the cottage. Refer Excess Charges Policy.
6. No Pets Policy. Pets are not permitted within the property boundaries at any time. Wanderers Retreat is in a koala and native fauna habitat. If you need to bring your pet away on with you, Cubbins Nelson Bay Boarding Kennels & Cattery is located only 2.4km away. Cubbins allows you to take your pet out for day trips to pet friendly beaches and parks.
7. Noise Policy. Quiet hours are between 10.00pm and 8.30am. All noise that would disturb others must stop between these hours. We want our guests to enjoy themselves and the amenity of the Retreat. It is the Guests obligation to conduct themselves in a manner that does not disrupt the amenity of other guests and that of the Retreat itself. While we encourage you to enjoy your stay, we remind you that Wanderers Retreat is not a "party house". Guests are asked to monitor and control their own group’s noise level, as excessive noise is not permitted at any time.
8. Visitors Policy. Wanderers Retreat is a "Guests Only" holiday resort. This is to ensure the amenity of the retreat for all guests. Only with Managements prior permission, guests are welcome to invite visitors between the hours of 10.00am and 8.00pm. Visitors must be registered at reception upon arrival for insurance and fire safety purposes. Visitors must comply with all requirements as if they are a staying guest. Visitors must park on the street. Visitors are not to use the properties facilities, including; the WiFi, SPA's, Hot Tubs and Pool. Guests will be required to pay additional tariffs for their visitors if they use the facilities or stay outside the set hours without agreement from Management.
9. Extras and Additional Guests Policy. All extras must be finalised in advance. The booking guest, at check-in, is obligated to advise management of any extra guests they would like to request to have stay with them but who are not currently included on their reservation. Subject to approval the additional payments must be finalised before the extra guest checks-in. For 2 night reservations a minimum of 2 nights tariffs applies for each additional guest. There is no discount for an additional guest staying 1 night.
10. Occupancy Limits Policy. Cottages are advertised with maximum sleeping capacities. There is no capacity for extra beds in the cottages. These limits are strictly enforced for your personal comfort and safety. Please note infants aged 2 and under are included in the occupancy calculations. For the Beach House management discretion applies with respect to additional allowance for infants.
11. Holding Private Functions Policy. Prior permission from management is required to hold a private function on the premises please. A bond may be required. This will likely be in the form of a pre-authorised credit card payment. For events a Council approval and permit will likely be required.
12. Guests must stay on the defined pathways or grass areas and are not permitted to walk through the gardens. Children are welcome to explore the grounds of Wanderers Retreat however they must not interfere or disturb other guests or their property. Children out of bound areas apply to the Treehouses, Bush Spa Cottage, carports, sheds and private dwellings. Children if not accompanied by an adult are to return to their cottages by 9:30pm. All children, under 15, must be under constant and direct adult supervision while inside the pool area and abide by the pool rules.
13. Guests booking and staying in Cottages with Hot-tubs are responsible for;
a) Ensuring that the Safety Cover, and the Access Gate where fitted, are closed and secured at all times when the Hot-tub is not in direct use.
b) Children must be supervised directly by an adult at all times when in the Hot-tub. Jumping is not allowed.
c) The Hot-tub cover is made of light weight material. The cover will not support any additional weight. The weight of a child will damage the cover. If damaged, the full cost of replacement will be charged to the guests account.
d) Ensuring that no open flames are used in a 5 metre proximity of the Hot-tub eg candles and mosquito coils.
Note: the Hot-tub water quality is monitored and tested daily to ensure your safety. Testing takes around 5 minutes and is generally conduct between the hours of 8.00am and 9.00am.
The Hot-tub , as part of our COVIS Safety Plan, is closed on the morning of check-out from 8.00am. This is to provide time for draining, cleaning, refilling and heating in readiness for the next check-in. We apologise for the inconvenience.
14. Guests booking and staying in Cottages fitted with an internal SPA bath are responsible for the safety of their children. Children must be directly supervised by an adult at all times while the spa bath is holding water.
15. No Open Flames Policy. Supplied candles may be used but only in the fully enclosed lanterns where provided. These are to never be left lit and unattended and never to be used near the hot tub or Spa’s. All other open flames are strictly prohibited at Wanderers Retreat (indoors and outdoors) for your safety. This includes but is not limited to mosquito coils, candles, fires and charcoal burners.
16. A maximum speed of 5km/hr applies to vehicular movement on the property and direction of travel is in a clockwise direction unless advised otherwise. No parking on the grassed areas please.
17. Excess Charges Policy. Wanderers Retreat reserves the right to recover from you Excess Charges for any additional expenses required to return the cottages and surrounds to a suitable condition to what it was at your check-in. To avoid Excess Charges, the cottage and surrounds are to be vacated on time and left in a condition similar to what it was at check-in.
Excess Charges may include but is not limited to the recovery of costs for; damages and restoration, stolen or missing property, excess cleaning costs, late check-out fees, and additional guests not included in the reservation. These costs can also include rental that is forgone due to the condition of the cottage or surrounds.
Wanderers Retreat maintains a very high standard of cleanliness. Before check-out place all crockery, cutlery, pots/pans and glassware in the dishwasher or hand washed, dried and put back in cupboards or drawers, rubbish and recycling into bins provided. BBQ’s are to be left clean.
Guests are to ensure any kitchen items and chairs removed from their original cottage for a group event are returned to the original cottage before departure.
Bedroom and lounge furniture including bed mattresses are not to be relocated or moved. Restoration charges, if moved do apply.
The minimum Excess Charge applied is $100 charge.
18. Loss or damaged key and tag. Keys and the stylised key tag are to be returned to the reception key drop at check-out please. The charge for replacing lost or damaged key and tags is $50.
19. Wanderers will provide waterproof mattress protectors upon request if there is any risk of bed wetting. Extra Charges for professional cleaning will apply for soiled mattresses.
20. Please report faults, damages and breakages straight away to Management. At Management discretion and subject to normal fair wear and tear, charges may apply for damages and breakages.
21. Guests and visitors will comply with all the Terms & Conditions, House Rules and any verbal or written instruction issued by staff on behalf of Wanderers Retreat. While we encourage you to enjoy your stay, we remind you that Wanderers Retreat is not "party house" and anti-social or offensive behaviour, drunkenness, aggressive or rude behaviour towards staff, illegal drug use and excessive noise are strictly prohibited.
22. Management reserves the right, without notice, to require any person(s)/group who contravene these requirements to vacate the property immediately. In the event that an eviction does occur, the accommodation is non-refundable.
23. By accepting the terms and conditions of Wanderers Retreat, it is acknowledged that permission is granted to Wanderers Retreat P/l to debit any of the above-mentioned charges to the guests credit card. Notification of such charges will be forwarded to the guest by e-mail to the address notified at the time of the reservation being made. Photographic representation will be satisfactory evidence in the event of dispute for any charges made under these terms and conditions.
24. A bond, whilst not mandatory, may be charged at the sole discretion of Wanderers Retreat, at any time prior to, or during your stay. A receipt for the bond will be forwarded to the e-mail address advised at the time of making the reservation. The amount will vary depending on the style of accommodation and may be up to the full amount of the reservation total. The likely form of the bond will be in a pre-authorised credit card payment.
25. Whilst not a condition of staying at Wanderers Retreat, we strongly recommend travel insurance be affected for the duration of your stay with us.
26. Governing Law and Jurisdiction: This Agreement will be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the Commonwealth of Australia and the parties submit to the exclusive jurisdiction of the State of New South Wales courts. The Parties will attempt to settle any disputes in an amicable manner by conducting in good faith discussions first.

Privacy Policy
The Privacy Policy at Wanderers Retreat Port Stephens is simple and straight forward. We do not share your private information with anyone, or any organisation unless required by law.
Payment Policy
1. Payment Policy: Wanderers Retreat to confirm your reservation requires a 50% deposit of your total tariff at the time of making your reservation. The credit card details provided by you at the time of making the reservation will be debited by 50% of the total tariff plus the full merchant fee when applicable.
The balance of your booking tariff is required to be paid 14 days* prior to arrival. All accounts must be settled 14 days* prior to arrival unless prior arrangements are made. If the reservation is made less than 14 days before arrival, then the full amount is due. The deposit and balance can be processed at any time after the above times.
You by staying at Wanderers Retreat, do duly authorise Wanderers Retreat to directly recover Excess Charges that may apply from your stay against the Credit Card provided for the reservation. Please refer to Excess Charges Policy below for details of this condition of your stay.
We accept Visa and Mastercard. Merchant fees will be applied at the rate of 1.1% for all Mastercard and Visa transactions. Direct deposits are fee free.

Cancellation Policy
2. Cancellation policies. Please carefully check the details of your reservation to ensure we have your selection correct.
For reservations other than Christmas Holidays (NSW Christmas public school holidays): Cancellations or date changes made up to 30 days prior to check-in will be fully refunded, less a $50 administration fee and merchant fees incurred. Cancellation or date changes made within 30 days of check-in date are subject to 100% of the total tariff and merchant fees incurred unless the Retreat can be re-booked.
For Christmas Holiday reservations (the NSW Christmas public school holidays): Cancellations or date changes made up to 60 days prior to check-in will be fully refunded, less a $50 administration fee and merchant fees incurred. Cancellation or date changes made within 60 days of check-in date are subject to 100% of the total tariff and merchant fees incurred unless the Retreat can be re-booked.
The Retreat, at its discretion, offers a cancellation credit for some emergency cancellations. To qualify the reservation must be greater than 7 days, be fully paid at the time of cancellation, and the Client must demonstrate to the Retreats satisfaction that a genuine personal emergency has prevented their intended stay. The funds paid, less a $50 administration fee and merchant fees incurred, will be held in your client account and you will be given 6 months to use this credit.
In the event of a necessary date change or cancellation, all reasonable steps will be taken to rebook the Retreat at the same rate as your booking. If re-booked, funds paid will be refunded less a $50.00 admin charge and merchant fees incurred.
2 a. COVID-19 Cancellation Policy. COVID-19 is a known risk. The Retreat, at its discretion, offers a cancellation credit for some emergency COVID cancellations. This policy applies to all new reservations booked from the 20th May 2020. To qualify; the guest named on the reservation must be under a personal directive by the State Health Authorities to self-isolate due to COVID19 and that this directive has a direct impact on their stay.
The Retreat at its discretion offers a credit on funds paid per our credit policy if a guests stay is prevented by State Government travel restrictions, and then only if they cancel their reservation outside the 7 days prior to check-in. For last minute COVID cancellations inside 7 days the standard cancellation conditions apply.
If the Government advice changes and Wanderers is required to close for a period of time, all applicable bookings will be given a non-refundable credit by Wanderers Retreat in accordance with legal requirements under Australian Consumer Law.
